A timely message that shows important information and possible actions, like options for saved passwords or usernames in Firefox.

autocomplete

The process of taking any part of a user’s input to match or predict input results. Do not hyphenate.

autofill

The process of automatically filling in fields with saved data, like passwords, credit card numbers, or addresses. Do not hyphenate.

breach

A security violation leading to a theft of personal, sensitive, or critical info by an unauthorized party.

data breach monitoring

A continuous check that alerts you if personal information like email addresses, passwords, phone numbers, or IP addresses appears in a known data breach. See also: breach.

email mask

An alternate email address that forwards messages to your real inbox while keeping your actual email address private. It helps prevent spam and keeps your real email address from being exposed, sold, or shared.

IP address

A number that identifies your device on the internet and helps it connect to websites. When using a VPN, websites see the VPN’s IP address instead of your own. See also: VPN

Mozilla VPN

Mozilla’s paid, standalone virtual private network (VPN) where you can turn it on to block advertisers and trackers and create website-specific location preferences. People can access Mozilla VPN through the app or by adding it as an extension.

Use the whole phrase, Mozilla VPN, when referring to this product. When referring to the built-in, Firefox browser-only, IP concealment feature, use VPN.

Do not shorten to VPN to avoid confusion between Firefox's built-in free feature and the paid standalone product.

primary password

The password that unlocks other passwords saved locally on Firefox. Primary password was formerly called Master Password. In English, the term “master” has a racist connotation. Firefox no longer uses this term.

VPN

A free IP concealment feature that can encrypt your traffic and hide your IP location when browsing in Firefox.

When referring to the built-in VPN feature, use qualifiers upon first-use like “built-in VPN”, “VPN built into the browser”, or “VPN when browsing in Firefox” to clarify it is the built-in offering. After that, VPN can be used alone in the UI.

Mozilla VPN should always use the full product name and include product-specific phrases like “beyond the browser”, “for apps and up to 5 devices”, and “whole-device protection” to differentiate from the built-in VPN offering.

When referring to the paid, standalone VPN product, use Mozilla VPN.

VPN data limit

The amount of free bandwidth allotted to people who use the VPN built into Firefox. The limit is set at 150 GB per month and resets on the first day of the month.

VPN location

The place your VPN uses to connect to the internet. Choosing a different VPN location makes it look like you’re browsing from that place instead of where you actually are, helping to keep your location private.
