A
a11y
Abbreviation for accessibility (11 letters between the A and Y), reserved for internal use or where space is a consideration, otherwise please avoid or explain on first use.
acronym
Uppercase with no periods, unless they are specifically part of a brand name or the result spells out a different word.
add-ons
Mozilla-specific term. Umbrella term for "extensions" and "themes." Note that “add-ons” is always hyphenated, never “addons”. Not always localized. See the Add-ons Terminology wiki entry for more information.
address bar
Use this instead of location bar, awesome bar, or URL bar.
AMO
Our internal name for addons.mozilla.org; do not use in any user-facing communications.
ampersand / &
Avoid using. Use the word "and." Examples: Paste and go (in address bar context menu) and Emoji and symbols (in input field context menu).
application menu
The main menu in Firefox desktop and mobile. Do not use the term "app menu" or "hamburger menu" in product copy. (Though we do use these terms internally.) Example: Open previous tabs? You can restore your previous session from the Firefox application menu [icon] , under History.
Awesomebar
Do not use.
B
Beta
See Firefox Beta.
blacklist/whitelist
Do not use. Use "block list/allow list" instead. Embedding the concept that white equals good or black/dark equals bad assigns value to physical features. Avoid the metaphorical use of white-black to connote good-evil.
buttons
Use buttons only to indicate a user action that updates the current screen or transmits information to the application (e.g., “Submit,” “Update Preferences”); see also “links”.
C
channels
Our term for the various builds of our products; please avoid in user-facing communications.
click
Do not use. Use "select" or "choose" instead. We’d rather engage users’ minds than their hands, and this also speaks more universally to users accessing the web with touchscreens, speech-recognition software, or other user input devices.
collections
Firefox for Android tabs feature. Lowercase, as in Save to collections.
colorway
A Firefox-designed theme that alters the appearance of the Firefox chrome separate from community themes. It's inspired by shoe / sneaker culture. It should not be capitalized. Can be referred to also as colorways. This term should be localized. In locales where “colorway” cannot be translated or unfamiliar to a culture, use a more utilitarian “color scheme.”
colorway collection
A series of colorways that launch together and expire together. A collection may be titled or themed (for example, Life in Color, Turning Red). A user does not have a collection of colorways.
customers
Do not use. In product we refer to "people."
D
dark patterns
Do not use. Use "deceptive design patterns" instead. Embedding the concept that white equals good or black/dark equals bad assigns value to physical features. Avoid the metaphorical use of white-black to connote good-evil.
data
Treat data as a singular entity: data “is” sent, this data “is” available; not data “are” sent, these data “are” available. In general, avoid using data as a term when you can use the more helpful term information, or when you can be more specific about types of data, like browsing history, IP address or timestamp.
Do Not Track
Capitalized when referring to the setting in privacy preferences.
double-click
Hyphenated in all forms and uses.
